In mid-October, I boarded a spacecraft, or at least it felt that way. Nashville’s SoundCheck was transformed into planet T.A.O.Z. for “The Art of ZHänrę,” a fully immersive concert experience crafted by ZHänrę himself.

In the weeks leading up to the show, he promoted the night as a cosmic voyage guided by the emperor of T.A.O.Z., inviting Earthlings to step through a portal into his world. From the moment I arrived, it was clear the vision extended far beyond the music. Two extraterrestrial figures in full space attire greeted guests at check-in, and my VIP bundle included glow accessories, a drink ticket, and a signed poster, signaling that every detail had been engineered for the experience, not just the music.

Inside the venue, the room sat in a dark, eerie glow with ambient space music and intermittent voiceovers from ZHänrę, instructing us to prepare for departure. Even before a musician touched the stage, the narrative had already begun.

The opening act, Kendre Streeter, set an impressively high bar with a seven-song set rooted in Neo-Soul, R&B, and funk. His control and range were undeniable from the jump. “Limit,” a bright and funky burst of energy, kicked the night off like a liftoff sequence, while “Mess in the Morning” showed the opposite side of his artistry with a crooning, emotionally vulnerable moment. He didn’t just warm the room up – he raised expectations.

Then the lights dropped again. After a brief reset, the emperor himself emerged.

ZHänrę took the stage with a two-hour marathon set and nearly 30 songs across multiple genres, all without ever losing steam. The opening segment blended Neo-Soul, hip-hop, R&B, and more. Among the opening songs was my personal favorite, “Waves,” a hypnotic performance that got shoulders moving and felt like the sonic equivalent of entering orbit. Later, he stripped everything back for an acoustic segment, including a stunning cover of Adele’s “Easy on Me,” proving that he is first and foremost a vocalist.

When the full band returned, the energy surged again. ZHänrę brought out featured artist Aye West for two songs, including a performance of his seductive single “Foreplay,” which sounded exactly like the title promises. The band stayed locked in through every twist and genre pivot. They were fully synchronized! There was not a single moment where the audience was pulled back to Earth by a musical misstep.

Midway through, a dramatic intermission turned Mozart’s “Lacrimosa” into a hip-hop groove backed by two interpretive dancers, turning into one of the most unexpected and artful moments of the night. The second act pushed even further into rock, funk, and R&B.

ZHänrę floated through “The Calm,” another favorite of the night, with its gripping melody and even stronger message. ZHänrę then reached back to earlier work, performing his very first song release “Everything I Have,” as well as a delicious cover of Ginuwine’s “Pony,” which electrified the crowd.

Across the entire show, his voice never wavered. The classical training, the hours of rehearsal with the band, the narrative structure, the set pacing, the staging: nothing felt accidental. Some artists can write, some can sing, some can perform, but very few can design an entire world and keep an audience suspended inside it for two hours. ZHänrę is one of those artists. He was born for the stage.

Congratulations to The Art of ZHänrę on a fully realized, interstellar performance that delivered on every promise. For two hours, we weren’t in Nashville anymore. We were on planet T.A.O.Z.!
